A new version of Ubuntu Linux was released yesterday. Jaunty Jackelope (or 9.04) is an part of Ubuntu's six month release cycle, and brings a score of new and updated features.
In case you have no idea what I'm talking about, Ubuntu is a distribution of Linux. Linux is a free operating system that can be used instead of Windows or Mac OS. The creators of Linux (and the hundreds of other projects included in Ubuntu) give their software away for free under open source and free software licences like the GPL.
Ubuntu is free, works on most computers, comes with tonnes more free software, and does have security and gradual slowness problems associated with commercial systems like Windows. And it's not just free in the sense that you can download it without a credit card. It's 100% legally free. The free software community operates on the belief that software should be shared by everyone, an idea that heavily influenced the Creative Commons and other free culture movements.
