This lecture examines the work of Tariq Ramadan, a Swiss academic and

Islamic scholar who has been referred to as today’s “Muslim Martin Luther.”

From an interfaith perspective and drawing several parallels between Islamic

and Catholic encounters with modernity, Baum compares the debates in the

two traditions. He argues that reform and renewal are compatible with the

One of the phenomena of the present, western world is a diminishing practice of religion and a growing interest in spirituality. We will focus on this phenomenon, examine the historical relationship between religion and spirituality, its apparent separation for many in today's world, and the question that this raises both for religious and spiritual practice.
